Andrea R. Callow, the 2009 Walter H. Moses Sr. and Walter H. Moses Jr. Scholar, grew up in Arlington Virginia and graduated from the University of Toronto in May of 2006. Andrea matriculated at Loyola University Chicago School of Law in September of 2009. She was attracted to Loyola because of its health law certificate. During the three years after Andrea graduated from college, she worked for two national, nonprofit, healthcare advocacy organizations: Families U.S.A. and the Medicare Rights Center. Her experiences in these positions crystallized her interest in serving the underrepresented on healthcare issues through direct representation and advocacy. In her work at the Medicare Rights Center, she demonstrated not only impressive analytical abilities to navigate the Medicare law and regulations but also a holistic approach to casework that left no stone unturned when it came to connecting her clients to appropriate and timely resources.

At her first opportunity at Loyola, she began to immerse herself in her area of interest and take advantage of Loyola’s interdisciplinary offerings by taking Access to Health Care her second semester. She was excited to have the opportunity to interact with class participants who came from many positions in the Chicago healthcare world and to participate in the class alternative spring break trip to Detroit where they met with various city officials, activists and community leaders to discuss access to health care for low-income people. For the summer after her first year, she volunteered as an intern with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Privacy and Civil Liberties.

The Chicago Bar Foundation is proud to support Andrea through the Walter H. Moses Sr. and Walter H. Moses Jr. Scholarship as she works toward a legal career to improve access to justice on issues related to health care for the low-income and disadvantaged who are in the most critical need of the protections of our civil legal system.
